Prayer to St. Gabriel the Archangel

St. Gabriel, whose name means "strength of God," is the archangel of the Annunciation. In the Old Testament he explains Daniel's visions (Daniel 8 and 9), and in the Gospel of Luke he announces the birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and then greets the Virgin Mary with the words "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee" (Luke 1:28). Because he brought the news of the Incarnation, he is honored as a patron of messengers and of all who communicate God's word.

The Church celebrates St. Gabriel together with Sts. Michael and Raphael on September 29. This prayer asks him to intercede for our present needs and, just as he announced the Incarnation to Mary, to help Jesus be formed in our souls. Pray it during Advent, on March 25, the Solemnity of the Annunciation, or whenever you need to listen for God's word.

The Prayer

O blessed Archangel Gabriel, we beseech thee, do thou intercede for us at the throne of divine mercy in our present necessities, that as thou didst announce to Mary the mystery of the Incarnation, so through thy prayers and those of the same holy Mother of God, Jesus, the fruit of her womb, may be formed in our souls. Amen.
