About St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael, whose Hebrew name asks the question "Who is like God?", is one of only three angels named in Scripture. The prophet Daniel calls him "one of the chief princes" and the great protector of God's people, the Letter of Jude names him an archangel, and the Book of Revelation shows him leading the angels of heaven against the dragon, the ancient serpent. From these few verses the Church has drawn a rich and confident devotion.

Christians have long turned to St. Michael as a champion in spiritual combat, a guardian of the Church, and a helper at the hour of death, when the soul most needs protection. Shrines rose in his honor at Monte Gargano in Italy and at Mont-Saint-Michel in France, and in 1886 Pope Leo XIII asked that a prayer to him be said after Low Mass throughout the world. Today the Church keeps his feast on September 29 together with Sts. Gabriel and Raphael. To pray to St. Michael is to remember that evil is real but never has the last word, because no one is like God.
