About St. Gabriel the Archangel
St. Gabriel, whose name means "strength of God" or "God is my strength," is the angel of good news. In the Book of Daniel he comes to explain the prophet's visions and to speak of the coming of the Anointed One. In the Gospel of Luke he appears to the priest Zechariah in the Temple to announce the birth of John the Baptist, and six months later he is sent to a young woman of Nazareth named Mary.
His greeting to her, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee," has become the opening line of the Hail Mary, repeated by Christians countless times every day. Through Gabriel's message and Mary's generous yes, the Word became flesh. Because he carried the most important message ever delivered, Pope Pius XII named him patron of those who work in telecommunications. The Church honors him on September 29 with Sts. Michael and Raphael. We can ask St. Gabriel to help us hear God's word clearly and, like Mary, to answer it with trust.
