Prayer for Caring for an Aging Parent

Caring for a mother or father in old age is one of the most loving and most demanding things a person can do. It can bring tenderness, exhaustion, guilt, and grief, sometimes all in one day. This prayer asks Christ, who entrusted His own Mother to St. John from the Cross, for strength, patience, and peace for both caregiver and parent.
The Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, from the Cross You gave Your Mother into the care of the beloved disciple, and from that hour he took her into his own home. Look with mercy on me as I care for my mother (or father) in these later years. The one who once fed me, taught me, and watched over me now needs my help. Give me a heart that honors my parent, as You commanded, not only in words but in patient deeds: in the long appointments, the repeated questions, and the small tasks of every day. When I am tired, be my strength. When I am frustrated, give me gentleness. When decisions are hard, send me the light of Your Holy Spirit and wise counsel from doctors, family, and friends. Comfort my parent in every weakness of body and mind. Where memory fades, keep Your love bright. Where there is fear, give peace; where there is pain, give relief; and where there is loneliness, let my presence be a sign of Yours. Give us both the grace to forgive old hurts and to speak words of love while there is time. Holy Mary, cared for by St. John, and St. Joseph, who died in the arms of Jesus and Mary, be near to us in this season of life. And when the day comes, grant my parent a holy and peaceful death and the joy of Your eternal kingdom. Who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.
Suggested saints: St. John the Evangelist, who cared for Our Lady, and St. Joseph, patron of a happy death. Remember to care for yourself, too, and to ask for help when you need it.
