About St. John the Apostle and Evangelist
St. John, son of Zebedee and brother of St. James, was a young fisherman when Jesus called him from his nets. With Peter and James he witnessed the Transfiguration and the agony in the Garden. The Fourth Gospel calls him "the disciple whom Jesus loved." At the Last Supper he rested his head on the Lord's breast, and he alone of the Twelve stood at the foot of the Cross, where Jesus entrusted His Mother to him: "Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own."
On Easter morning John ran with Peter to the empty tomb, "and he saw, and believed." Tradition credits him with the Gospel of John, three letters, and the Book of Revelation, and holds that he lived to old age at Ephesus after an exile on the island of Patmos, the only apostle not to die a martyr's death. His Gospel soars like an eagle, which is his symbol, and in his old age, it is said, he would simply repeat, "Little children, love one another." John teaches us to rest close to the Heart of Jesus and to take Mary into our homes.
