About St. Peregrine Laziosi
St. Peregrine Laziosi was born around 1260 in Forlì, in northern Italy, at a time when the city was in rebellion against the pope. As a young man he was politically active against the papal cause, and according to tradition, when St. Philip Benizi, a Servite friar, came to preach peace, Peregrine struck him in the face. Philip's gentle response moved him deeply, and he repented and turned to God.
Peregrine joined the Servants of Mary, the Servites, in Siena and later returned to Forlì, where he became known for his prayer, his penance, and his care for the sick and poor. He is said to have spent long periods standing in prayer. Around the age of sixty he developed a painful, cancerous sore on his leg, and his doctors decided it must be amputated. The night before the operation, he prayed for hours before a crucifix, fell into a sleep, and dreamed that Christ reached down from the cross and touched his leg. In the morning the wound was healed. He lived to about eighty, dying around 1345, and was canonized in 1726.
