Prayer to St. Peregrine for Those with Cancer
St. Peregrine Laziosi (1260-1345) is the patron saint of people living with cancer and other serious illnesses. As a young man in Forli, Italy, he was hostile to the Church, but after his conversion he joined the Servite Order and became known for his penance and care for the poor. Late in life he developed a painful, cancerous wound on his leg and was to have it amputated. After praying through the night before a crucifix, he awoke healed.
Pray to him for yourself, for a loved one facing a diagnosis, surgery, or treatment, and for doctors, nurses, and caregivers. His feast is May 4. Below is a short invocation followed by the traditional collect of a holy confessor. Please continue all medical care; prayer and medicine work together.
The Prayer
St. Peregrine, faithful servant of God, who were healed of a grievous wound after a night of prayer before the Crucified, intercede for all who suffer from cancer and serious illness. Obtain for them strength, patience, and, if it be God's will, healing of body, and above all peace of soul. Let us pray. O God, who dost gladden us by the yearly festival of blessed Peregrine, Thy Confessor: mercifully grant that, as we celebrate his heavenly birthday, we may also imitate his deeds. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
