Prayer for Vocations

Jesus told His disciples, "The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth labourers into his harvest" (Matthew 9:37-38). This traditional prayer takes up that command, asking God, through the intercession of Mary and all the saints, to raise up laborers for His Church at home and abroad so that His kingdom may spread throughout the world.

Pray it for vocations to the priesthood, religious life, and missionary work, for seminarians and novices, and for young people discerning God's call. It is especially fitting on Good Shepherd Sunday (the Fourth Sunday of Easter), the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, at Ember Days, and in families who want to be open to whatever vocation God gives their children.

The Prayer

O God, Who dost will not the death of the sinner, but rather that he be converted and live, grant, we beseech Thee, by the intercession of the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, and of all the Saints, an increase of laborers for Thy Church, both at home and abroad, that Thy kingdom may be spread throughout the world. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
