Prayer for Travelers

Christians have always asked God's protection before setting out on a journey. The old Roman Breviary contained a special set of prayers for travelers, the Itinerarium, and this prayer shares its spirit, asking God to send His angels to accompany those on the road. The Book of Tobit tells how the Archangel Raphael guided young Tobias on his long journey and brought him home safely, which is why Raphael is honored as a patron of travelers.
Pray it before a road trip, a flight, a daily commute, or a pilgrimage, and for family members who are traveling. It works well as a family prayer by the car before leaving, followed by the Sign of the Cross. Truck drivers, pilots, and anyone who travels for work can make it part of their routine. When you arrive, remember to give thanks.
The Prayer
O almighty and merciful God, Who hast commissioned Thy angels to guide and protect us, command them to accompany Thy servants on their journey; that they may be preserved from all dangers of soul and body, and, having reached their destination, may return in safety to their homes. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
