Prayer for the Sick

The Church has always cared for the sick in body and soul, following Christ, who healed so many during His earthly ministry. This prayer comes from the Church's traditional Mass and rites for the sick. It asks God, "the eternal salvation of those who believe," to show mercy to those who are ill, so that with health restored they may give Him thanks in His Church.

Pray it for a family member or friend who is ill, at a hospital bedside, before a treatment or surgery, or for everyone on your parish's prayer list. Remember that the sick can also receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; ask a priest to visit. You may want to add the name of the person you are praying for, along with a Hail Mary to Our Lady, Health of the Sick.

The Prayer

Almighty, everlasting God, the eternal salvation of those who believe, hear us in behalf of Thy servants who are sick, for whom we humbly crave the help of Thy mercy, that, being restored to health, they may render thanks to Thee in Thy Church. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
