About the Holy Guardian Angels
The Church believes that God, in His goodness, gives each person an angel to watch over them. Jesus Himself warned against despising the little ones, "for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father" (Matthew 18:10). The Psalms speak of angels charged to guard us in all our ways, and the Acts of the Apostles shows the first Christians speaking naturally of St. Peter's angel.
The Catechism teaches that "from its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession." Devotion to the guardian angels grew steadily through the centuries, and the memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels is kept on October 2. Many Catholics learn the little prayer "Angel of God, my guardian dear" before any other. Our guardian angel does not replace our own freedom or effort. Rather, he is a faithful companion who prompts us toward the good, protects us from harm we never see, and prays for us. A simple greeting each morning and night is a beautiful habit to keep for life.
