About St. Thomas the Apostle
St. Thomas, also called Didymus, meaning "the Twin," was one of the Twelve. He is remembered above all for the week after Easter. He had not been with the other apostles when the risen Jesus first appeared, and he declared that unless he could see the wounds and put his hand into His side, he would not believe. Eight days later Jesus appeared again and invited him to do exactly that. Thomas answered with the clearest confession of faith in the Gospels: "My Lord and my God."
Thomas was also courageous. When Jesus decided to return to Judea, where His enemies waited, it was Thomas who said, "Let us also go, that we may die with him." At the Last Supper his honest question, "How can we know the way?" drew from Jesus the words, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life." An ancient tradition holds that Thomas carried the Gospel to India, where the Saint Thomas Christians still honor him as their father in faith, and that he was martyred there. Thomas shows that honest questions, brought to Christ, can end in adoration.
