About St. Philip the Apostle
St. Philip came from Bethsaida in Galilee, the same town as Andrew and Peter. St. John's Gospel tells us that Jesus found him and said simply, "Follow me," and that Philip immediately went to find his friend Nathanael, telling him they had found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. When Nathanael scoffed, "Can any thing of good come from Nazareth?" Philip gave the best possible answer: "Come and see."
Philip appears several more times in John's Gospel. Before the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus tested him by asking where they could buy bread for so many. When some Greeks wanted to meet Jesus, they came first to Philip. And at the Last Supper Philip asked, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us," drawing from Jesus the answer, "He that seeth me seeth the Father also." Early tradition holds that Philip preached in Asia Minor and died at Hierapolis in Phrygia. His relics rest with those of St. James the Less in Rome, which is why they share a feast. Philip teaches us to invite others simply: come and see.
