About St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was born in 1647 in Burgundy, France. After her father's death, she suffered a long illness as a child and years of hardship at home, where relatives controlled the household and treated the family harshly. Drawn to prayer from an early age, she entered the Visitation convent at Paray-le-Monial in 1671.
Between 1673 and 1675, while praying before the Blessed Sacrament, she received a series of visions of Jesus, who showed her His Heart burning with love for humanity and grieved by coldness and ingratitude. He asked for acts of reparation, for Holy Communion on the first Friday of each month, for a holy hour, and for a feast in honor of His Sacred Heart. Many in her community doubted her, and she suffered greatly, but her Jesuit confessor, St. Claude de la Colombière, believed and supported her. She died in 1690. Devotion to the Sacred Heart spread through the whole Church, and in 1856 the feast was extended to the universal calendar. Margaret Mary was canonized in 1920. Her message is simple: Jesus loves us with a human heart and longs for our love in return.
