St. Barbara is one of the most popular saints of the early Church, honored for centuries by miners, firefighters, soldiers and anyone who works near fire and sudden danger. Her Life

The oldest written accounts of St. Barbara were set down centuries after her death, and they differ on details such as where she lived. The Catholic Encyclopedia of 1913 notes that her story cannot be confirmed by early records. What has come down to us is a story that the faithful have loved and retold since at least the seventh century.

According to tradition, Barbara was the daughter of a wealthy pagan named Dioscorus. She was so beautiful that her father, wishing to guard her from the world and from unwanted suitors, shut her away in a tall tower. In her solitude she thought deeply about the world around her and came to believe that the idols her father worshiped could not be real gods. Through a Christian teacher, the legend says, she learned the faith and was secretly baptized.

While her father was away, workers were building a bathhouse for him. Barbara asked them to add a third window to the two that were planned, so that the three windows would stand for the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. When Dioscorus returned and learned that his daughter had become a Christian, he flew into a rage. Barbara fled, but she was caught and handed over to the governor of the province.

The governor ordered her tortured, hoping to force her to give up her faith. The legend tells that her wounds were healed each night and that she remained calm and steadfast. At last she was condemned to death, and her own father carried out the sentence by beheading her on a mountain. As he came down, he was struck by lightning and killed. A Christian named Valentinus is said to have buried her body, and her tomb became a place of healing.

Because of the lightning that struck her persecutor, Christians began to ask Barbara's help against storms and fire. As gunpowder came into use, those who worked with explosives, cannons and mines took her as their protector too. She was also invoked by people who feared dying suddenly without the sacraments, and she is often shown holding a chalice and Host. In 1969 her feast was removed from the General Roman Calendar because so little is known of her life, but she remains in the Roman Martyrology on December 4, and devotion to her is strong around the world. Artists through the centuries painted her with her tower, and soldiers once kept her image in gunpowder stores, which the French still call a sainte-barbe.

Legacy

Whatever the details of her life, St. Barbara stands for a faith that does not bend under pressure, even from one's own family. Miners, firefighters and soldiers still ask her protection as they face danger, and many Catholics ask her prayers for a holy death.

Prayer to St. Barbara

O St. Barbara, faithful virgin and martyr, you held fast to Christ when everything was taken from you. Protect all miners, firefighters, soldiers and all who work in danger. Shield us from fire, storm and sudden death, and obtain for us the grace to receive the sacraments and to die in God's friendship. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
