Prayer to St. Lucy, Patron of Eyesight

St. Lucy of Syracuse was a young Christian woman martyred in Sicily around the year 304, during the persecution of Diocletian. Her name comes from the Latin word for light, and she has long been honored as patron of the blind and of anyone with eye trouble. She is named in the Roman Canon of the Mass, and her feast on December 13 falls in the darkest part of the year, when many countries celebrate her as a sign of Christ's light coming at Christmas.

Pray to her for good eyesight, before eye surgery, for those losing their sight, and for spiritual light in times of confusion. The traditional collect of her feast is below.

The Prayer

Let us pray. Hear us, O God our Saviour, that as we rejoice in the festival of blessed Lucy, Thy Virgin and Martyr, so we may learn to walk in loving devotion to Thee. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. St. Lucy, whose name means light, pray for all who suffer in their eyes, and obtain for us the light of faith.
