Prayer to St. Dymphna for Anxiety and Mental Health
St. Dymphna is the patron saint of those who suffer from anxiety, depression, and mental and emotional illness. According to her ancient story, she was a young Irish princess of the seventh century who fled her home to escape her father, who had become unstable after her mother's death. He found her at Geel, in present-day Belgium, and killed her there. Healings were soon reported at her tomb, and for centuries Geel has been known for its loving care of people with mental illness, many of them welcomed into local families.
Her feast is May 15. Turn to her in times of anxiety, panic, or darkness, and for loved ones who struggle. Prayer is a real help, but it is not a substitute for care; please reach out to a doctor, counselor, or crisis line when you need support. Below is a simple invocation, followed by the Church's traditional collect for a holy virgin and martyr.
The Prayer
St. Dymphna, virgin and martyr, patroness of those who suffer in mind and spirit, pray for us. Obtain for us, and for all who are troubled by anxiety, fear, and sadness, peace of heart and the healing that God wills for us. Let us pray. O God, who among the other miracles of Thy power hast given even to the weaker sex the victory of martyrdom: mercifully grant that we who celebrate the heavenly birthday of blessed Dymphna, Thy Virgin and Martyr, may by her example draw nearer to Thee. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
