Prayer of St. Richard of Chichester (Day by Day)

St. Richard of Chichester (1197-1253) was an English bishop known for his simple life, generosity to the poor, and courage in standing up to the king. According to his early biographer, he spoke this prayer on his deathbed. Its closing lines, asking to know Christ more clearly, love Him more dearly, and follow Him more nearly, became famous in the twentieth century as the song "Day by Day."

The prayer joins thanksgiving for all Christ has done with a desire to grow closer to Him. It is ideal as a daily prayer after Holy Communion, at the end of a retreat, or as a simple resolution each morning. St. Richard's feast is April 3.

Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits Thou hast given me, for all the pains and insults Thou hast borne for me. O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may I know Thee more clearly, love Thee more dearly, and follow Thee more nearly, day by day. Amen.
