About Our Lady of the Rosary
The memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, kept on October 7, recalls the great naval battle of Lepanto on that date in 1571. Pope St. Pius V had urged Christians across Europe to pray the Rosary for the fleet of the Holy League, and when news of the victory arrived he attributed it to Mary's intercession and established a feast of Our Lady of Victory. His successor Gregory XIII renamed it the feast of the Holy Rosary, and it later spread to the whole Church.
The Rosary itself grew over centuries from the practice of praying the 150 Psalms, or 150 Hail Marys for those who could not read them, while meditating on the lives of Jesus and Mary. Dominican preachers did much to spread it, and many popes have commended it warmly. In 2002 Pope St. John Paul II added the Luminous Mysteries. The whole month of October is dedicated to the Rosary. With Mary as our guide, its simple repeated prayers let us walk slowly through the Gospel and keep the face of Christ before us.
