About Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal
In 1830 the Blessed Virgin appeared several times to St. Catherine Labouré, a young novice of the Daughters of Charity, in the convent chapel on the Rue du Bac in Paris. On November 27 of that year, Catherine saw Mary standing on a globe with rays of light streaming from her hands, framed by the words "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." She was asked to have a medal made according to this design, with the letter M, a cross, and the Hearts of Jesus and Mary on the reverse.
With the approval of the archbishop of Paris, the first medals were struck in 1832. So many graces of conversion and healing were reported that people soon called it the Miraculous Medal. Catherine told almost no one that she was the visionary and spent forty-six quiet years caring for elderly men. The medal is not a lucky charm. It is a small, wearable prayer, a reminder that we belong to Mary and may turn to her in every need, confident that she leads us to Christ.
