About Our Lady of Good Counsel
The title Our Lady of Good Counsel is tied to a small, gentle fresco of the Virgin and Child kept in the Augustinian church at Genazzano, a hill town southeast of Rome. According to tradition, the image appeared there on April 25, 1467, and the shrine soon drew pilgrims from all over Italy. Popes visited and honored it, and in 1903 Pope Leo XIII, who had a lifelong devotion to it, added the invocation "Mother of Good Counsel" to the Litany of Loreto.
The title expresses something the Gospels show clearly. Mary listened to God's word and pondered it in her heart, and at Cana she gave the best counsel anyone has ever given: "Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye." The Church also calls her Seat of Wisdom, because the eternal Wisdom of God rested in her arms. Students, parents, and anyone facing a hard decision have long turned to Our Lady of Good Counsel, asking her to help them see clearly, choose rightly, and follow her Son with confidence.
