Epiphany Prayer

The Epiphany, traditionally celebrated on January 6, commemorates the visit of the Magi, who followed a star to Bethlehem and worshiped the Christ Child with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh (Matthew 2:1-12). The feast celebrates Christ revealed to all nations. This prayer is the traditional collect of the day, asking that we who now know God by faith may one day contemplate the beauty of His majesty face to face.

Pray it on the Epiphany, during the Christmas season, or whenever you seek God's guidance. Many Catholic families bless their homes at Epiphany by marking the doorway with chalk: the year and the initials C+M+B, for the traditional names of the Magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, and for Christus mansionem benedicat, "May Christ bless this house."

The Prayer

O God, Who by the guidance of a star didst this day reveal Thine only-begotten Son to the Gentiles, mercifully grant that we, who know Thee now by faith, may be brought to contemplate the beauty of Thy majesty. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
